What Bernie Sanders Gave to America Today

1

Today, my hero, Bernie Sanders, endorsed Hillary Clinton, a woman that I truly believe is sociopathic, for the office of the President of the United States and then immediately the sun hid behind a cloud and it began to rain.

I was grateful for the rain.

It’s been pretty humid here for the last several days and I was in need of the empathy.

I fought back tears as I left the gym.

I am not afraid to cry.

I just prefer to do it while I am writing.

I went home and grabbed my laptop.

I knew all this fire stinging my eyes was way too complex to be worked out with a box of tissues or a ton of free weights.

I made a point to stay off social media.

I had no time for haters, turncoats or conspiracy theorists.

I drove to the coffee shop and put in my ear buds.

Behind my glasses, I watched people moving here and there, seemingly clueless to the great turmoil taking place in their country.

I did not envy them.

I am awake now.

And I will never sleep again.

Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders is the greatest politician of my lifetime.

He is the greatest statesman of my lifetime.

He is the greatest human being I have ever had the privilege of witnessing.

He is the voice of my generation and long after he ceases to speak, his words will echo throughout the hearts and minds of millions.

Bernie Sanders is an activist.

He stood up for me before I even knew his name…before I was even born.

Bernie Sanders inspired tens of millions of people to get outside of their comfort zones and shove their middle fingers in the face of evil.

Bernie Sanders was “dangerous”.

Bernie Sanders rattled cages.

Bernie Sanders raged against the machine!!

Bernie Sanders taught us all how this thing was supposed to be done.

Bernie Sanders is a prophet and a Buddha.

He continued to speak peace when all those around him declared war.

He woke up an entire generation and inspired tens of thousands to perform a hostile takeover of their government.

Bernie Sanders is a true revolutionary.

So why the hell did he endorse Hillary Clinton?

3

Do not tell me that Bernie Sanders is just another bought and paid for politician.

To even utter such nonsense would show complete and all-encompassing ignorance.

This man has fought for what is right when literally no one was fighting by his side.

This man went toe to toe with Alan Greenspan for eight and a half hours.

This man spoke the truth why corrupt politicians laughed at him and left the room in blatant shows of disrespect.

Bernie Sanders was the tree, falling again and again in the D.C. forest of corruption.

Bernie Sanders was the one hand clapping against the fascist regime, when you and I were still watching CNN and calling it news.

Bernie Sanders is The Truth.

So don’t even think about telling me that Bernie Sanders sold out, as if suddenly, after 40 years of trying, the powers that be, finally found some secret treasure that Senator Sanders could not resist.

And do not waste my time with your foolish conspiracy theories about how Hillary Clinton threatened him in some way.

They have been threatening Bernie Sanders for decades.

Bernie Sanders does not succumb to threats.

Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton because he cares more about us than he does about selfish glory.

Bernie Sanders changed the world again today and if you weren’t watching closely, you may have missed it.

Bernie Sanders just sent millions of poor kids to college.

Bernie Sanders just saved millions of lives.

4

As part of Bernie Sanders’ agreement to endorse Hillary Clinton, Clinton had to agree to support free public universities for low income families.

This is not something that she wanted.

So why will she keep up her end of the bargain?

Because she is driven by ego.

She wants to be recognized as a good person and a good president.

I know she lies and breaks promises and Bernie knows this too.

But she won’t break this one, because Sanders handed her the carrot, but saved the stick for us.

Today marks a reset button for Hillary Clinton.

Bernie Sanders gave her a chance to step up and do the right thing and if she doesn’t, then she will find that there are tens of millions of sticks all over this country that will cut through the air simultaneously and make her presidency a complete debacle.

I am referring to the tens of millions of activists who will watch Hillary Clinton’s every move from this day forward and make her life difficult every time she breaks a promise to the American people.

I am referring to the tens of thousands of activists who are running for public office, who will take over our House and Senate and infect change from the inside.

I am referring to you.

You have a stick and I encourage you to use it.

Because of Sanders’ sacrifice today, millions of American children will have a way to escape extreme poverty and follow their dreams.

Because of Sanders’ sacrifice today, there is now light penetrating the darkness in the places that our government forgot to represent.

I, like you, wanted Bernie to win the Presidency and there is little doubt that he could have done so through an Independent run, but if he had won, he would have met with extreme opposition from the establishment that owns every branch of our government.

Sanders would have toiled in office, waiting for new elections, so that activists could take over the seats required to pass the bills that the establishment would strike down.

So Sanders did what any wise old warrior would do.

He conceded the battle, so that we might win the war.

And Clinton will get the college bill passed through, whereas Sanders would not have been able to.

She has the contacts in the House and Senate to make it happen.

It will become the cornerstone of her presidency.

She will act like she thought of it and the uninformed will talk about what a hero she is and she will stand on the stage and wave and smile and some impoverished child somewhere will show their report card to their mother and their mother will smile and say..

“Thanks to Hillary, you will be able to become a doctor if you keep this up.”

And those millions of educated young people will go out and change the world for the better.

So just in case you missed it..

That’s what Bernie Sanders gave to America today.

  1. Bernie sanders endorsed Hilary because he is stupid. He should have seen from obamas presidency that there is no such thing as accountability. I don’t know who is more short sighted, the writer of this article or Bernie.

  4. A little too effusive. Bernie is a truth teller, but saying he is the greatest human, greatest statesman… is a bit much. Maybe you should get out more. Meet other amazing people. I wish Bernie had won the nomination, but H did. She is our only hope to defeat T and the crazy repubs, but as soon as the election is over H will turn to what got her here. Acting like one of “the boys” and making changes inch by inch. Bernie would have flipped the system on its ear for the benefit of all Americans. H will prob be more go along to get along, but T would be a disaster. So, welcome to the machine as it keeps rolling along. Anything else would be a stunning change from her MO and history.

I’m sorry I can’t send that message to my kids that being a big bully or not paying for crimes instead get a pass to a president seat… No I won’t.

  6. Jasmine Mauldin FAQ time:
    Q. Why did Bernie endorse Hillary now?
    A. They threatened to completey shut him out of the convention if he didn’t.
    Q. Couldn’t he have said screw them and go and fight at the convention anyway?
    A. No. Hillary has more delegates, Superdelegates, and supporters on the DNC rules committee. They would have voted down every one of our platforms, denied Bernie the opportunity to speak, and basically shut him out of the entire process. All the leverage he has gained up to this point would be gone.
    Q. So wait, Bernie DIDN’T quit today?
    A. No. He had to say she won the primary, he endorses her and will help the party defeat Trump, yadda yadda but he DID NOT concede. There is a very big and important difference. Had he conceded, all of his delegates would go to Hillary and he would no longer be an option for nominee.
    Q. So Bernie can actually still win??
    A. YES. And if he wasn’t still TRYING to win, he would have conceded. The ONLY option he had to get to the convention with his delegates behind him and have a chance to still win was to do what he did today. He is not a traitor. He didn’t sell us out. He did the only possible thing he could have done to keep fighting for the nomination.
    Q. So how can Bernie still win if he’s losing the delegate count and he just said he will help Hillary win the election?
    A. By far the most important thing to the DNC, even more important than making sure Hillary beats Bernie, is making sure the Democratic nominee beats the Republicans in November. They scrutinize every poll, every opinion of the public, every event to judge whether a candidate is strong enough to win in November. There are A LOT of things going on right now that show how weak of a general election candidate Hillary Clinton is:
-66% of the country sees her as untrustworthy
-60% thinks she should have been indicted for the email scandal
-A lot of Bernie supporters won’t vote for her
-Congress has requested the Department of Justice investigate her for lying under oath about the email scandal
-There’s a possibility more emails will be leaked by wikileaks or hackers further proving her guilt
-Many believe the FBI is secretly investigating the Clinton Foundation
-Her “wins” during the primary havr been tainted with accusations of fraud, suppression, lawsuits, and investigations
And then there’s Bernie. An honest candidate people trust and whose approval rating and trustworthy rating crushes Clinton’s. This is the argument Bernie will make at the convention. With all his 1,900 delegates inside arguing this case and 100,000 supporters outside arguing this case, we hope the DNC realizes he’s the only choice. He CAN win the convention, but he has to get there first. That’s why he endorsed her today.
    Q. So it’s still important that all of his delegates go to the convention and we all still March on it like we planned?
    A. It’s more important now than it ever was before.
    Q. What if the DNC still refuses to nominate him at the convention? Can he still run third party now that he endorsed her?
    A. Yes. In fact, running third party has never been an option until AFTER the convention. We need to stick with Bernie and see this through to the convention. He’s led us this far. Do not abandon him now.
    Q. What if he loses at the convention and doesn’t run third party, but instead endorses Hillary 100% and asks us to vote for her?
    A. Then our revolution continues without him and we continue to fight against Hillary Clinton and the DNC all the way up to November and beyond by voting for someone like Jill Stein or writing Bernie in. But the time for that is NOT here yet.
    Q. So what did Bernie accomplish with this move?
    A. Backed into a corner, facing the entire political pressure of the Democratic Party and the DNC, robbed of a right to claim he should be winning if not for a rigged process, and faced with the threat of being shut out of the convention completely Bernie:
    1. Managed to stay in the race and secure a prime speaking slot at a contested convention which he can turn into a floor fight
    2. Kept all of his delegates to use as leverage in that floor fight
    3. Got tens of thousands of people to “Like” and “follow” Green Party candidate Jill Stein on social media
    4. Amplified the ‪#‎NeverHilliary‬ screams of his supporters for all the media and Superdelegates to see 12 days before the convention.
Anyone trashing Bernie today needs to wake up and respect the masterful chess move he just made.

In some states we weren’t even allowed to vote in primaries if we’re registered Green Party. I want Bernie to switch back to Independent and become or next president.

If you have two very poor choices to pick from, what do you do??? If you vote for one, he or she is deeply flawed.
To carefully weigh my options, I ask myself, who is the lesser of the two evils. Rather than waste my opportunity and not vote, reluctantly, I’m voting for Clinton! My rationale is this great country of ours should always come first, period. In time, hopefully, I will get used to Clinton’ s self serving attitude. I would probably never get used to Trump’s stupidity.

We need to be grateful for Bernie amazing accomplishments and honor his endorsement.
Otherwise why were you supporting him in the first place?
Now that he has endorsed Hillary, many will vote for her.
Because it’s the only way to defeat Trump. Otherwise he would have endorsed Jill.
What just happened in Britain was classic voter complacency in all it’s ugly glory.
How on earth can anyone realistically expect a Green will win the Presidency over an exceptionally well-funded, deeply experienced Democrat? Yes, she’s deeply flawed, but get real.
Look, feel & deeply understand the disaster that Trump would be to the world. His environmental policies alone would be a serious disaster. It’s really time to wake up folks. Bernie changed Hillary’s game. We need to be grateful for that and honor his endorsement and not waste valuable votes as many of us did when voting for Ralph Nader costing Al Gore the presidency.

The goal of my article was to point out what Bernie Sanders is trying to do.

People think he is selling out, but he is not.

It will take many years before we are able to understand the full scope of what he is currently doing.

If we end up getting stuck with Hillary then we either have to revolt or work with it by changing the foundation under it.

  22. Beautifully written summation of Bernie’s gift to the world. He IS a wise old warrior and he knows what a sociopathic Trump presidency would look like. There is no other sane choice to carry his flag forward. Rebelling again Hillary would only bring possible end to civilization as we know it. Sadly, a vote for Jill Stein is just a wasted vote, and ultimately a vote for Trump. Just as a vote for Nader gave us the devastating Presidency of G.W. Bush–the world would look much different today if Al Gore had been elected. Hillary will protect a woman’s right to chose, she will enact positive climate change regulations, she will appoint liberal Supreme Court Justices, she has fought for Universal health care coverage with a public option before and she will fight for it again, and yes, she will fight for affordable college access. She will get things done–she knows the system and if we can turn the Senate blue she will have an easier time than President Obama did to move our country to the left. She won’t start race wars and we can trust her with the nuclear codes. Bernie knew all this, and if we really have trusted Bernie with the future of our country and the world, then we must trust his wisdom now!!!!

    1. What a heartfelt outpouring of support for Bernie. And I want to thank Paula Slater for her thoughtful response. Bernie is truly the most sincere and compassionate politician of my lifetime (and I’m an old guy!) His vision for the our country is remarkable and he would make a fantastic president! I so wish he would have won the democratic nomination…but alas, he didn’t.

On to Hillary and trump. I am a (retired) psychologist, and I can say without a doubt that neither Hillary or trump are sociopaths. They aren’t even close. I realize everyone is pissed off, but please don’t start throwing out nasty labels that actually undermine what Bernie has stood for throughout this election….speaking with integrity and honesty. I would agree that Hillary and trump are both egotistical pathological liars (which Bernie has noted). There is ample evidence for this claim. So I can see that the educational benefits promised by Hillary probably won’t happen. But I do believe that Hillary does value public education, unlike trump, and that she will fight for an increase in affordable college access. I have also heard Hillary support universal health care, social justice, and a woman’s right to choose. Some values that are very important to my heart. She ain’t Bernie, but she still is the best viable option (by far).

Now, I do prefer Jill Stein for her moral character and her representation of the Green Party platform, but agree with Paula, that unfortunately a vote for Jill Stein would only help trump win this election. I wish it were different, but that is the reality.

Another reality is if trump wins, with a republican majority in congress, then many of our educational, economic, healthcare, criminal justice, immigration, and environmental policies will be undermined. We will have a supreme court that leans conservative and our minority and women’s rights will be diminished. And we will probably start some new wars. This and much more is at stake in this election.

So please step outside your feelings and vote with what you value. Vote not just for you, but also your children, your community, our country, the world, and our planet. This time around, your vote represents what is best for everyone and the future path of our country. The movement Bernie has started will continue to grow and our future elections will have the honesty and integrity that we all want.

  28. That’s a lovely piece with some lovely thoughts. But I can’t agree with your conclusion. You have faith that Mrs. Clinton as president will keep the “promises” that Bernie has forced into the party platform. But the party platform will be forgotten within months after the election, as it always is, and there will be nothing meaningful that either we or Bernie can do about it. I’ve watched dozens of such presidential election platforms come and go, and there’s no reason to believe that this one will be any different. The items in the platform that don’t align with HRC’s thinking will be quickly forgotten, or will be relegated to some meaningless gesture. Bernie endorsed HRC as a defensive move against the possibility of Mr.Trump winning the election, and it’s only in that light that I can understand it. I don’t blame him for it, but I find it depressing that “the system” – now thoroughly corrupt – has won out.
Keep your chin up – the opportunity will come again.
